Hidden wanted

According to Joshua 2

1. Secret Mission

The people of Israel are on their way to take possession of the land of Canaan. Joshua, the leader of the people of Israel, calls for two strong, brave men. He tells them: Go and look at this land and the city of Jericho, and then report to me everything you have seen.

Finally, in the evening, the two scouts have arrived in Jericho. A woman named Rahab, a prostitute, takes them in. Now the men have a hiding place.

2. In the Name of the King

It doesn't take long before the king of the land finds out. He immediately sends soldiers and tells them: 'Two spies have infiltrated Rahab's house. Hurry and capture them!'

Rahab sees two soldiers approaching her house. 'Quick, hide! These men are looking for you.'

Rahab tells the spies: 'Hide on the roof under the flax stalks.' No sooner have they hidden than there is a knock at the door: 'Open up, in the name of the king!' Rahab opens the door and answers their questions: 'Yes, two foreign men were here, but they have gone. Hurry after them quickly, maybe you can still catch them.'

3. God is great

After the soldiers were gone, Rahab comes onto the roof. She says: I know that the Lord will give this land to you.

And said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.
And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.
Josua 2:9-11 (ESV)

These statements testify to the faith in the true God, who made heaven and earth. Rahab's faith comes through hearing the message.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Romans 10:17 (ESV)

4. Rahab's Request

She is speaking to the men! I saved your lives. Please swear to me now by the Lord that you will spare me and my family. I also pray for my family and siblings and all their relatives. Save us from death. The men replied: Nothing shall happen to you and your family.

5. The Commandment

Rahab's house was on the city wall. This way, Rahab could let the men down by a rope. As a farewell, the scouts said, 'We have sworn that you will be spared. Listen to what you must do: Tie the red rope to the window through which you saved us. Bring all your relatives that you asked about into your house.' 'Alright,' said Rahab, 'so be it.' Before that, she also said, 'Hide yourselves for three days in the mountains.'

After the scouts had left, she tied the red rope to the window.

6. Rahab and Her Family

The people of Israel captured Jericho. Joshua spared Rahab and her family.
According to Joshua 6:25

Rahab had followed the instructions and then experienced: Through faith in the living God, she gained a new life community within the people of Israel.

7. God's Saving Grace

Their liberation, our liberation. It came from outside. The red rope protected her. An image of the blood of Christ.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. Ephesians 1:7 (ESV)

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10 (ESV)

The word gave Rahab assurance. The promise became reality. Even today, anyone can come into connection with God. This happens: through hearing – believing – asking – and doing.
