David's biography

David was the youngest of Jesse's 8 sons and came from Bethlehem. He was the great-grandson of Boaz and the Moabite Ruth. His grandfather was named Obed. (According to 1 Chronicles 2:13-16)

David was beautiful, strong, eloquent, and could play stringed instruments. As a shepherd of Jesse's sheep, he showed himself to be brave and reliable. In the presence of his father and brothers, he was anointed by the prophet Samuel as Saul's successor to become king. (According to 1 Samuel 16:1-13)

1. A heroic deed

After David brings down the giant Goliath (the champion of the Philistines) with a stone in the shepherd's sling and in the name of the Lord, thereby deciding the victory, Saul summons him completely to the royal court. (According to 1 Samuel 16:14-23)

We too are fighting against a giant and have proven weapons.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’
Isaiah 28:16 (ESV)

Here the stone is not thrown, but stands firm, like a rock in the surf. The sword is seen as the word of God.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, Ephesians 6:17 (ESV)

When we come with God's Word and in the name of the Lord like David, we have the best equipment and do not need to flee.

2. Praise and Prayer

Exultantly, all the Israelites bring the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord back to Jerusalem, to the city of David. The praise team plays on horns, trumpets, cymbals, harps, and lyres. And David has the Levites begin a song of thanksgiving as follows.

Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place. Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!
1 Chronicles 16:27-28 (ESV)

Then David goes once again into the Holy Tent. Kneels before the Lord and prays:

Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you, for it is you, O LORD, who have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”
1 Chronicles  17:27 (ESV)

Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?
1.Chronicles 17:16 (ESV)

And now, O LORD, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as you have spoken.
1.Chronicles 17:23 (ESV)

3. His failure

In the middle of the height of his power during the Ammonite war, David falls into deep sin. His failure as a father. Unfortunately, he was not a good role model for his children:

Then David himself violently broke God's guardrail through adultery. He had the husband of the woman with whom he began adultery killed by placing him at the most dangerous front in the war. (According to 2 Samuel 12)

4. David asks for forgiveness
David bends down deeply and prays: Lord, forgive me!

Psalm 51 Verses 3-6 and 9-16:
  • Verse 3 - He praises God's mercy
  • Verse 4 - Asks for forgiveness
  • Verse 5 - Recognition of guilt
  • Verse 6 - Sin against God
  • (against you I have sinned)
  • Verse 9 - Sin has burdened his conscience
  • Verse 10 - Request for renewed joy
  • Verse 12 - Request for a pure heart
  • Verse 13 - Do not take your Holy Spirit from me.
At the anointing to be king, the Holy Spirit comes upon him and does not leave him again. 1 Samuel 16:13: Now the request: do not take your Holy Spirit from me.

His name expresses how God thinks, beloved of God. In 1 Samuel 13:14 he was called a man after God's own heart.

It is not failure that is decisive, but the wealth, the promises of the merciful God. In God's judgment, his sins are forgiven and erased.

We need fathers and mothers and grandparents who bring their children and grandchildren in intercession before the Lord.
One of our sons had fallen into a severe crisis. Do you know what he did? He went to his grandmother, who understood his distress. She prayed in the name of the Lord Jesus and poured everything in her heart. He survived the crisis and became strong in faith.

Are we ready for this? Then let us pray for our families and ask for God's blessing for them!

The last words of David are:

Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, the son of Jesse, the oracle of the man who was raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel: “The Spirit of the LORD speaks by me; his word is on my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of Israel has said to me: When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God, he dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning, like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth. “For does not my house stand so with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire?
2 Samuel 23:1-5 (ESV)
