God reveals His plan

When the Bible speaks of revelation, it means this: God, who is hidden, makes himself known. This happens in many different ways:
  • God reveals himself through His creation. (based on Romans 1:20)
  • He reveals himself through His actions in history.
  • He reveals himself through His Word.
  • His deeds show who he is. (based on Psalm 105)
  • In the commandments that God gave to Moses, he reveals his will.
    (based on Exodus 20)

1. A Profile of Moses

What do we know about Moses?

Parents: Amram and Jochebed
Siblings: Miriam and Aaron

  • Even as an infant, Moses was in danger of losing his life. At three months old, he was placed among the reeds by the sea.

  • He was discovered by Pharaoh's daughter.
  • After he was weaned, he was brought into the palace.
  • Pharaoh's daughter raised him as her own son.
  • He received the best education available.

2. Moses Cares for His Brothers

When he was forty years old, he began to care about his brothers, the Israelites. One day, an Israelite was being mistreated by an Egyptian. Without hesitation, Moses intervened and killed the Egyptian. The incident became known.

3. Moses Leaves Egypt

He fled to Midian, where he lived as a foreigner. He found work with Jethro, the priest, and became a shepherd.

He married Zipporah, one of Jethro's daughters. Two sons were born to him:

Gershom – Foreigner
Eliezer – God is my help

Forty years passed. Day after day, he tended sheep.

4. God Reveals Himself to Moses

An unexpected change occurred. God had prepared everything, including the man he had chosen for this task.

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. Exodus 3:1 (ESV)

A bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. How could such a thing happen?
"I will go over and see this strange sight." Suddenly, he heard a voice calling his name: "Moses! Moses!" "Here I am." He looked around but could see no one.

"Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5 (ESV)

5. God Introduces Himself

"I am the God whom your father worshiped, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

Then the LORD said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings.
Exodus 3:7 (ESV)

6. God's Plan of Salvation

"So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Yes, I have heard the cries of the Israelites. I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them. I know their pain."

Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” Exodus 3:10+11 (ESV)

7. God Encourages Moses

"Moses, you will not go alone. I will be with you. You can rely on me. I will give you a sign by which you will know that I have sent you. You can trust me completely; I will be your help."

Moses replied: "When I come to the Israelites and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what shall I tell them?"

God answered:  "I AM WHO I AM. Tell them: 'The Lord has sent me to you, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.'"

8. God's Universal Plan

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16–17 (ESV)

God does not want people to be lost, but desires that they come to the knowledge of the truth. (Based on 1 Timothy 2:4)

God's plan is anchored in His Word. Anyone who is interested can learn about it. God's Word is personal. The psalmist gives us this encouragement:

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Psalm 32,8 (ESV)
