God's soothing hands

Psalm 145:13-19 (ESV):

  • 13: Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works.
  • 14: The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.
  • 15: The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.
  • 16: You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
  • 17: The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works.
  • 18:The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
  • 19: He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.

David concludes the chapter with praise for the blessings of God:

„My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever“  Psalm 145:21 (ESV)

1. What does soothing touch do?

The need to touch and be touched is deeply rooted in humans. In premature babies, touch promotes growth, and in older people it provides closeness and security. But researchers are discovering that people are touching each other less and less.

2. Soothing hands open!

Open hands are giving hands. This is a picture of the giving, the generous and bountiful goodness of God.

3. The pleasure of God lies especially in Jesus' hands

Jesus' hands were always open to bless. He laid his hands on the children, the sick, and the afflicted and blessed them. He had these hands pierced and now all people experience God's pleasure. Before he was taken up into heaven, he raised his hands and blessed his disciples.

4. Beneficial hands are helping hands!

What could our help look like in practice? - help the refugees - the people in the disaster areas in their need: The German people, business associations, politicians, churches and many volunteers are very exemplary!

Very current - floods in the Stuttgart region:
There was a lot of cleaning up after the flood. The citizens helped a lot. The citizens heard screams and were unable to help. The tidal wave came overnight and left a trail of devastation. Many neighbors helped each other. Furniture broke. Mud and rubbish have piled up in front of the houses. Many people had to take out the garbage. Many people helped with their trucks, vans or trailers.

5. What does the Bible say about how we can help?

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,  Proverbs 25:21 (ESV)

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 (ESV)

Song: Take my hands, show me how I can serve; Take your feet, make them quick to follow you at your beckoning (Pfingstjubel 320)
