Words about Advent
We live in a time where things are getting darker and darker. Great events cast their shadows; there is a saying.
More and more people consciously no longer want to live according to God's rules... whereas the Ten Commandments and basic ethical instructions of the Bible previously founded jurisprudence, state legislation now approves what God's Word forbids.
There has never been such widespread persecution of Christians as in our generation.
1. A large light lights up
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. Isaiah 9:2 (ESV)
What kind of light must this be that is described here in God's Word as a great light?
2. Maranata, our Lord is coming!
There have been times in human history when believers greeted each other with Maranata. Our Lord is coming. That time wasn't too long ago. It was the late 1940s and early 1950s of the 20th century... At that time, hardly an evangelistic campaign went by without this theme.
The word Maranata comes from Aramaic and means: Our Lord is coming! It is a liturgical call to confession in the early Christian celebration of the Lord's Supper. Source: Duden
And today? I fear that the majority of us no longer expect the Lord to return soon. But the end comes as a surprise.
3. Jesus calls for vigilance
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Matthew 24:44 (ESV)
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Matthew 24:44 (ESV)
During my daily devotions I often pray that Lord Jesus will come soon. Let us as a family and our relatives and the church be ready for your coming, Come soon Lord Jesus!
4. What should we pay attention to?
Peter writes about the light:
And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,. 2 Peter 1:19 (ESV)
We have a living hope and wait for the soon return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In the well-known Advent song we sing: Daughter Zion, rejoice! Shout loudly, Jerusalem! Behold, your king comes to you; yes, He is coming.
