See your King coming

A prediction is a look into the future. Example: Predicting the weather and climate change. The Word of God gives a prediction: prophecy.

The prophet Zechariah lived about 520 BC and was the son of the priest Berechiah. He was given the task of strengthening God's people and encouraging them with the following words:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 (ESV)

This message was a bright ray shining into the future. The prophet speaks of joy, jubilation, of a king who brings hope and salvation.

1. The Fulfillment of Prophecy

After 500 years, the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 was fulfilled. There were only a few days before the Passover. The memory of the Exodus from Egypt. Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem with his disciples. Many people followed them.

Near Bethany, Jesus sent two disciples ahead with the command, "Go to the village ahead." Right at the entrance to the village you will find a young donkey tied up there. Untie him and bring him here! The disciples went there and found everything as Jesus had described it to them.

Then they brought the young donkey to Jesus. They put their cloaks on the back of the donkey and let Jesus ascend. He moved on and the people spread out their clothes as carpets. What a sight and an unusual experience.

Suddenly, at the point where the road leads down from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem, the whole crowd of disciples burst into rejoicing.

2. Joy, joy, great joy

They thanked God for the many miracles they had witnessed. One shouted: "Jesus had raised the dead!" The other cried out: "Jesus had made the lame walk! The deaf could suddenly hear, the blind eyes saw" There were shouts of joy, many voices, even lepers were healed. People swung palm branches.
(According to Luke 19:28-38)

They sang aloud:

Saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Luke 19:38 (ESV)

No one could have guessed that in a few days people would cry: "Crucify him, crucify him, away with him!"

3. Jesus, I am a king

Jesus was interrogated by Pilate. He asked, Jesus, are you the King of the Jews? The leaders of your people have brought you here. What have you done? Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. My kingdom is of a completely different kind. Then Pilate asked, "Then you are a king after all?" Jesus answered, "Yes, you are right. I am a king. And for this I became a man and came into this world to testify to the truth
(After John 18)

4. Jesus the only Son of God
  • Heaven belonged to him, but he gave it away.
  • He had a throne, but he descended.
  • God's Son became a servant.
  • He had perfect joy, but he allowed himself to be pierced on the cross.
  • He died on the cross. He did that for you and me. His heart longs for us.

5. God invites us to enter the kingdom of heaven.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (ESV)

God speaks to us human beings, through His Word, that is His voice. The Word of God tells us what to do and what not to do.

He expects a reaction, an answer, from us humans to his great offer. It could be as follows:
  • Jesus, you died for me
  • I believe in you
  • I confess my sins to You, please forgive me my sins
  • I do penance (repentance and change of heart)
  • I accept you as my Savior and I always want to belong to you
