Joy and Gratitude
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his[1]; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures for ever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Psalm 100:1-5 (NIV)
Read these magnificent words slowly, noticing their rhythm, their rising and falling cadence. Pay attention to the alternation between calls to action and heartfelt confession. Together they ring out like two beautiful church bells sounding in harmony.
1. Come before Him with joyful songs
2. Know that the Lord is God!
Who is God? A supreme being? A higher power? God's Word gives us the answer:
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Romans 1:20 (NIV)
- God has revealed Himself through His actions in history.
- His mighty works show us who He is (see Psalm 105)
- In the commandments He gave to Moses,
He revealed His will (Exodus 20)
Our very lives come from Him. He made us to be His people, the sheep of His pasture.
3. Jesus brings clarity
Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3 (NIV)
4. I am the Good Shepherd
He knows each of His sheep by name. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He leads them, provides for them, and keeps them safe.
The image of the shepherd and the flock speaks of deep security, loving care, and a place of true belonging.
5. A Song for the Thanksgiving Service
Let us enter His sanctuary and come into God's presence. He is the Creator to whom every person owes their life. The Lord alone is God, and the worshiping congregation is the people of His pasture.
In worship, our belonging to God becomes especially real. Through His Word we receive strength to persevere, to stand firm, and to grow in faith. We thank Him with songs of praise and bless His holy name.
For the Lord is good to us. His steadfast love never fails, and His faithfulness endures through every generation.
Chorus: Something deep within me tells me that You are real. I am certain that You are alive, that You know me, and that You love me. You make me laugh; You fill my heart with song. You make me dance; my soul comes alive. I breathe freely in Your presence. Lord, You alone give me joy that comes from within—joy that no one can take away. Lord, You fill my life with the light of Your love. (Lyrics: Albert Frey)
