Miracles of God

DE Deutsch EN English

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!Psalm 96,3 (ESV)

We humans all come into situations where we urgently need God's miracles. There are statements like:

  • A miracle has happened
  • A parking space is free!
  • Or, if no miracle happens here, then the gold medal is gone.

The word miracle is used in very different senses. These examples mean a surprising event. Every unexpected piece of luck is quickly called a miracle. What do we actually mean when we talk about a miracle?

1. Miracles in the Bible

The Old Testament records a multitude of miracles.

  • Die zehn Plagen in Ägypten
  • Wasser aus einem Felsen in der Wüste
  • Das tägliche Manna, Brot aus dem Himmel
  • Die Teilung des roten Meeres
  • The ten plagues in Egypt
  • Water from a rock in the desert
  • The daily manna, bread from heaven
  • The Parting of the Red Sea

Miracles abound in the Bible. In characters in which the story can be directed towards its final goal in a particularly powerful way. God does not distribute miracles randomly, like with a watering can. They appear in the great events of salvation history that cannot be fully understood by man. C.S. Lewis

There are dramatic events, the exodus from Egypt and the conquest of the promised land. For centuries, miraculous deeds of God were extremely rare. Elijah and Elisha, great prophets of Israel, performed individual miracles. Isaiah, Jeremiah or Ezekiel do not do that at all.

2. The miracle as a message

It is far more appropriate to see Jesus' miracles as an indispensable part of his message. The miracles are the tangible demonstrations of his proclamation of the dawning Kingdom of God. For much of Israel's history, miracles do not occur. Spiritual life was not tied to the ability to perform miracles, but rather to the right to treat others with kindness and to live in reverence for God.

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 6:8 (ESV)

3. The greatest miracle

The greatest miracle is the incarnation of God in Jesus. According to Luke 2:1-7 (HFA)

A Biblelexikon speaks of 41 miracles that Jesus performed.

The blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers[1] are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.Matthew 11:5 (ESV)

4. A family miracle

My loving and praying mother-in-law was so ill that she had to have stomach surgery. The day before, her bed was pushed into the hallway. All the relatives were there. A few sentences were exchanged, prayers were said, then farewell was said. My mother-in-law was hit hard: after the operation there were problems with her heart, she developed fever and pneumonia as well as circulatory difficulties. The chance of survival was slim. But she knew she was in God's hands. God had also given her a promise in a prophecy:
"You are allowed to look after your husband. He was demented. The miracle happened. She was able to be released and do her job.

What is the result when a miracle occurs? It can trigger the following:
  • Amazement
  • Thanksgiving, praise and worship
  • Joy
  • Awe
  • A decision for Jesus is made
  • You just want to stay connected to Jesus
  • Jesus becomes known because word gets around

Great is our God!

5. Our task

Our task is to pass on the miracles of the Bible from generation to generation - and also the events in our time.

A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. vollbracht hat. Psalm 78:1-4 (ESV)
