Take care of yourself

What does the word self mean? Take care of yourself—look after your own well-being. Pay attention to yourself and be mindful of your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

The word self emphasizes that you are personally responsible for taking care of yourself.

To be self-confident means to be convinced of your own abilities and to recognize your value as a person.

1. Paul’s letter to Timothy

To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 1 Timothy 1:2 (NIV)

"I greet you, dear Timothy. You are as dear to me as a son, and I wish you grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.”
According 1 Timothy 1:2

Use the gift that God has given you. Continue to take care of the responsibilities entrusted to you, and do not allow yourself to be distracted.

Pay attention to yourself. Make sure that you continue to pass on the teaching of Jesus Christ faithfully and without distortion. In faithful discipleship, in times of persecution, and while carrying out important responsibilities, remain faithful in your service to the Gospel.

2. But You, Timothy

You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance.  2 Timothy 3:10 (NIV)

A Warning Against False Teachings:

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer.
1 Timothy 1:3 (NIV)

Paul connects the care of one’s own life with faithfulness to God’s teaching. The two belong together: our faith should not only be visible in our words, but also in the way we live.

3. Personal Requests

Now I ask you: please come to me as soon as possible!

And now I want to give you some personal advice: do not drink only water any longer. You are often unwell, and a little wine would be good for your stomach.
According 1 Timothy 5:23

To “pay attention to yourself” means:

Take care of your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Be careful not to become overwhelmed, hurt yourself, or get yourself into difficult situations.

4. This Is Not Only About Timothy

This is not only about Timothy—it is about every person.

It is remarkable how often ideas such as pay attention, take care, and yourself appear in our language. This should make us stop, reflect, and then take action.

Final Thought:

God does not call us to be perfect. But He invites us to pause again and again and to turn our hearts toward Him.

When we remain close to Him, He can change us, strengthen us, and even touch the lives of others through us.
