Our travel destination

1. Come with us, we want to do you good

And Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will do good to you, for the Lord has promised good to Israel.” 30 But he said to him, “I will not go. I will depart to my own land and to my kindred.” 31 And he said, “Please do not leave us, for you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will serve as eyes for us. 32 And if you do go with us, whatever good the Lord will do to us, the same will we do to you.” Numbers 10:29-32 (ESV)

Moses asks his brother-in-law to travel with them to the land of promise - to the land of Canaan. They set out from Mount Sinai and by God's guidance - the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night - reached the plains of Moab in three days.

The dwelling place of the Lord and the various tribes ahead. Then finally Moses speaks to his brother-in-law Hobab and says to him, “Come” with us, we want to do you good; for the LORD has promised good things to Israel! Moses pointed out to him the goal that lay before them, the promised Canaan, but the brother-in-law returned to his friendship.

Moses never tired during his entire journey. He repeatedly encouraged the people and their families not to stand still, but to move on!

2. Our journey

The people of Israel came out of the land of Egypt. With the strong and powerful hand of God they were led through the desert and after a long journey they finally reached their land!

Our journey also goes from the temporal to the eternal destination. Although the earthly Canaan had milk and honey and the best fruits to enjoy, it cannot be compared to the Canaan that awaits us.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
Hebrews 11:8-10 (ESV)

3. This city is also our travel destination

We want to reach out to the heavenly goods that neither moth nor rust can destroy. We can already carry the future of glory within us, just as the finance minister of Ethiopia believed the saving message of Jesus - then was baptized and then continued on his journey full of joy. According to Acts 8:26-39

So we can also say with the songwriter: We happily make a pilgrimage to our homeland, on the good old path. All doubts and questions come to rest here, the good old way.

Judge Mengins accepted Jesus Christ into his life. One day he visited his friend. They were happy together and talked about many things. As he was saying goodbye, Mengins' friend asked: "Is it true, have you experienced Jesus Christ?" and you said nothing about it to me, who was lost!" He accused him harshly.

Often we are with people for hours and days, perhaps our entire lives, and they don't know that we are Christians. Are we alone in striving for this wonderful goal? We want to set out and testify courageously that people can walk this path with us; we want to radiate joy that only Jesus Christ can give. Let us say with Moses, “We depart to the place of which the LORD has spoken.” Our goal is an eternal, glorious city built by God.
